Accidents involving electric bikes, scooters, and mopeds rose sharply

Electric bicycles, scooters, and mopeds related accidents have been steadily rising across Mongolia over the past four years, with the latest figures pointing to a troubling trend. According to the Traffic Police, these types of accidents are now being recorded daily, resulting in increasing harm to lives, property, and public health.

In 2022, authorities registered 50 such accidents nationwide. That number jumped to 305 in 2023 and surged to 532 in 2024. As of August 2025, 470 cases have already been documented. This marks a sharp increase compared to the same period last year, when 384 accidents had been reported—a year-over-year rise of 86 cases.

In response to the growing concern, A.Bayar, Chair of the Ulaanbaatar City Citizens’ Representative Khural and Head of the Capital City’s Crime Prevention Coordination Sub-Council, has launched a public awareness campaign in partnership with the Traffic Police. Titled “Better Safe Than Fast”, the initiative is designed to promote safe and responsible use of electric motorcycles and similar vehicles.

Authorities are reminding the public that operating an A-class vehicle (motorcycles and mopeds) on public roads requires riders to be at least 18 years old, to hold a valid A-class driver’s license, and to ensure that their vehicle is in proper working condition. Riders are also required to travel on the right side of the road and to wear appropriate protective gear, including helmets and safety clothing, at all times.

Officials emphasized that safety should take priority over speed, urging all users of electric mobility devices to participate in traffic with awareness, responsibility, and respect for others on the road. As the popularity of these vehicles continues to grow, the importance of building a culture of safe, lawful, and courteous riding becomes ever more urgent.
